The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and visionary leader to join MassMutual’s Research & Development (R&D) organization as the Head of Emerging Technology. In this role, you will be responsible for defining and executing a research program focused on the development and adoption of next-generation capabilities in emerging technology, including augmented and virtual reality, sensors and IoT, blockchain, and similar nascent fields.

The Team

The Research and Development organization is dedicated to delivering transformational change for MassMutual, its clients, financial professionals, and policyholders. Our team comprises data scientists, engineers, social scientists, and product and project managers committed to innovation. We value creativity, courage, and accountability, and maintain close partnerships with academia, government agencies, and the broader fintech community.

The Impact

  1. Establish and lead a research program in advanced and emerging state-of-the-art topics such as blockchain, augmented and virtual reality, and IoT.
  2. Develop roadmaps for projects and pilots, ensuring their successful and timely completion.
  3. Partner with Enterprise Architecture and the broader technology team to develop long-term strategies, including cost-benefit analysis and current state implications.
  4. Align research initiatives with company strategy in collaboration with senior leadership.
  5. Work across business stakeholders to identify high-impact use cases for new technologies to drive business value.
  6. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to translate research findings into actionable business opportunities.
  7. Design, analyze, and report on experiments, findings, and learnings.
  8. Disseminate findings through various media including visualizations, reports, and presentations.
  9. Attract, develop, and retain a high-performing team of engineers and scientists.
  10. Mentor junior team members, manage financials, and stay updated on emerging technologies and methodologies.

The Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in engineering, computer science, or related disciplines.
  • 7+ years of relevant research experience.
  • 3+ years of experience managing engineering or research teams.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn new concepts, methods, and technologies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to translate research into business impact.
