Principal / Staff Level Ruby Engineer - London - £130k Equity About the Role: This Staff/Principal Engineer will play a crucial role in developing core services and infrastructure, mentoring team members, and collaborating with product leadership to drive technical decisions. You'll have the opportunity to influence both product direction and engineering practices while leading key initiatives. The salary for this role is up to £130,000. Main Responsibilities: Design, build, and maintain efficient, reusable, and reliable Ruby on Rails code. Lead delivery for a team of engineers, ensuring high-quality implementation and on-time delivery. Mentor and coach less experienced team members, supporting their technical growth and career development. Collaborate with senior engineering management on technical strategy and roadmap planning. Contribute to product decisions, working closely with product managers to shape feature development. Identify and address performance bottlenecks and scalability challenges. Participate in architectural discussions and help set engineering standards. Technology: My client’s application is built on a Ruby on Rails monolith with Postgres and Redis. They embrace Rails conventions and proven patterns that let them move quickly while maintaining stability and predictability. They leverage Cloudflare’s ecosystem to solve real challenges, from asset optimisation to SSL management and intelligent queue management. Their frontend approach combines modern ViewComponents and Hotwire with clear ERB views, giving them reactivity without complexity. Requirements: 8 years of experience with Ruby on Rails in production environments. At least 2 years in a team lead or tech lead role. Proven track record of mentoring and developing engineering talent. Strong understanding of web application performance optimisation techniques. Experience with scaling applications and managing platform infrastructure. Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly. Demonstrated ability to influence product decisions and technical direction. Knowledge of different software delivery methodologies (Agile, Kanban, etc.) and ability to tailor processes to team needs.
